What do you think are the typical problems with CVs that fail to impress an Employer?
poor english and too wordy, use short sentences make sure its double spaced and does it look good in appearance, dont use fancy templates not needed
Reply:Everyone here has provided great input. One additional problem I would to comment upon, however, is the issue of RELEVANCY.





Often times, job applicants make the mistake of sending the same CV or resume to each and every prospective employer. In this day and age of computers, word processing programs and the like, it is SO EASY to create a customized CV or resume - one written specifically for the job in question.





I'm not suggesting major re-writes, but even a fine tuning of one's professional objective or organizing one's skills in such a way that they address the skills that the employer is seeking could dramatically improve one's ability to land an interview.





As you review your CV or resume before submitting it for consideration, ask yourself this: Is this document relevant to the position being advertised? If it isn't, re-write it.
Reply:if your CV is too long they will just chuck it in the bin. I went to a job interview and the person who was interviewing me had to take a call, it was someone asking about their cv being handed in. I saw the woman pull out the cv from the bin and say oh yes I have just found it!





No more than a page or 2 max. ensure your spelling is correct and the layout and grammar is ok.





also dont go too far back, people sometimes put GCSE's etc, if your not 18 then they dont care.
Reply:As an employer who chucks 99% of applications I get in the trash, I would say





1) CVs which have not been tailored specifically to the job


2) Poor spelling and grammar


3) Weird hobbies


4) Unattractive formatting making it difficult to read


5) Too long


6) Too short


(2 pages of A4 with plenty of white space is fine)
Reply:For me, a CV which the candidate has not bothered to read through and correct (or even got someone else to read through %26amp; correct!) immediately goes in the bin.


Very long CVs for people with little time actually spent working (I had a 9 page CV the other day for a guy who had been working for just over 2 years!!!)


CVs where the person really sounds their own horn SO much that you just know they would be impossible to work with (and probably don't actually have a clue about the areas they are discussing)


CVs where the person always refers to I rather than WE when discussing work carried out with a team.


Oh - and purely personal - CVs that have been printed using Times New Roman - I find it impossible to read at !0pitch and if you have ever had a CV faxed to you you will understand that TNR just turns into a smudge!
Reply:When I am given a pile of CV's to go through and 'short list ' them the first ones to go on the disposal/rubbish bin pile are those with an aim/objective/personal statement on them.





CVs shoould ONLY contain your Education (WITH the grades you got in Exams - no matter how bad other people say they are) and Employment History.

CV's should be a maximum of 2 pages with the bare minimum of information, but tailored to suit the particular job that you are appying for.

Information that isn't really needed, for example like: what school you went to, and what grades you got.


Too many pages, should be really one page with all the info that is needed.
Reply:I never use CV's when recruiting. It is much fairer to get applicants to complete a standard applciation form and ask them to describe how they meet the person spec for the job.
