Why does CVS always ask for my Extra Care Card when I make a purchase?

I know what the Extra Care Card is used for, but I wouldn't think that CVS wants me to save money. There's probably a twist or some hidden fee into this that I'm totally unaware of. Defunk it.

Why does CVS always ask for my Extra Care Card when I make a purchase?
it's not to save you money. the save-you-money part is to bribe you into using the card in the first place.

so why do they do it? databases and direct marketing. every time you buy something and use your (CVS, or safeway, or whatever store) card, the information about what you bought is stored and uploaded into a central database. the stores analyze this data both to look for statistical trends so they can make better advertising. people who buy flea spray also buy cat litter, for instance, so they advertise the two things together. or, people from the south like crispy taco shells whereas people from the midwest like soft taco shells, so they advertise the right product in the right place.

however, the creepiest use is that they also do direct marketing. you had to give them your address when you signed up, and they can send you ads in the mail based on your purchase history, or even sell your purchasing history information to other junk-mail companies. for this reason my friends and i would often trade the cards to confuse their software.
Reply:well, i meant real address, cos i was talking about all those garbage flyers i have to sort through every other day. i'm sure if they got ahold of your email address they'd spam you there too! Report It

Reply:Nope, far as I know, its to try to save you some money. Some places require their staff to say or do certain things %26amp; not doing so could reflect on their job performance. For instance, there is a clothing store that I go to %26amp; one of the employees (whomever is nearest the front door) has to greet the customers in a specific amount of time, also asking if there is anything they can do to help them. If they don't %26amp; it is found out, it means their job...
